SPM students , I hope that all of you have begun preparations for the coming exams. The
months leading up to an exam can be tiring and stressful, but there's no greater feeling
than seeing an A* on your certificate at the end of the day. Instead of studying hard, here are some tips to focus on and score that A* for your add maths exam.

Unlike subjects like history and business studies, mathematics is a participating subject.
This means that you have to do questions over and over again in order to get the hang of
what you're doing. You have to be involved in the entire learning process, and this means
doing questions and solving problems. Maths is not a subject which you can learn by
watching the teacher solve problems on the whiteboard. Set aside some time each day, it
need not be long, to do some past year questions or some questions from the textbook. A
little bit each day works out to be a lot more than studying a lot in a single day.

2) Understand your basics
Mathematics, unlike certain memorising subjects, is a progressive subject. This means
that you build your understanding based on your basic math foundation. Just as you will
never understand multiplication before understanding addition, you will never be able to
advance far in mathematics if you don't understand your basics. Get help from a teacher
or a tuition teacher if there is something you don't understand.

3) Concepts are important
Rather than blindly memorising that sin 30=1/2 or that sec2(x)=1+tan2(x), it is more
important to understand how these formulas came to exist. If, in any case, you happen to
forget a pre-memorised formula in the exam, understanding the concept behind the formulawill always allow you to derive it again. Not understanding the concept, however, would leave you stranded without a formula to use.

4) Be neat!
Though not a major stressing point, it is always important to be neat when it comes to
writing answers out. When in a hurry, students tend to rush their work, leaving smudges
and scratches here and there. Who knows, one of those scratches may accidentally turn a
negative sign to a positive sign, ruining your entire math problem.

5) Ask!
Never be afraid to clear your doubts if you have any. An unclear doubt is always bound to
come back to haunt you. Never be embarrassed to ask a question, as there is always
someone else who is bound to have the same question in mind.
Keeping these tips in mind, make full use of the few months left to the exam. Study hard, study smart, allot your time carefully and do your best!
